The Way of Kings

I went into reading The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson with high expectations. There was sooooo much positive hype about the fantastic world building and hard magic system.

Front cover of the book

I felt like i’d been mugged.

By the time i’d finished it, I felt like i’d been mugged. Not only was the world building self-contradictory and the magic system relatively soft, but the prose and writing style were mediocre at best. At least 10% of this 1000 + page monster is pointless repetition. Another 20% is back/side story with little or no relevance to the plot or action.

I also found the main characters to be pretty flat and universally petulant. A few of the side characters were neat in some ways.

In short, this is little more than the original author’s attempt at fan-fic for their own story.

1 out of 5 stars for Brandon Sanderson’s effort in turning up and writing so many words, I suppose. All this said, if being disrespected by the author appeals to you, then you are certainly going to love this book.

Please leave a short message to let me know if you found my review helpful, or at least interesting.

Even better, if you are already familiar with any of the books in the Stormlight Archives series, let me know if you agree with my assessment or if you think I have misrepresented something, but do remember NO SPOILERS! We don’t want to ruin it for others.
