Anne Du Lac

Filled with action and conflict, Anne du Lac and the King’s Birthright by Lon Torman and Rebecca Carroll is a competent Low Fantasy ‘race to the finish’ yarn. Though at times overly wordy, this refreshing take on the legend of king Arthur of Camelot took me on a romp through medieval England that kept me entertained from cover to cover.

…three separate yet intertwined stories.

With just a little more character development and tighter prose, this might easily have achieved five stars. As it is, the plodding nature of the exposition detracts slightly from the excellent core plot.

Particular praise must be given for the central character of Anne du Lac. Never completely in control, never imbued with all the answers or the greatest strength. This determined, tough and confident young lady wins through not by some god given right but through thinking on her feet and putting in the effort. Turning failure into success through hard work alone and always being prepared to roll with the punches, this protagonist is a delight to follow.

An admirable 4 out of 5 stars for the writing team of Lon Torman and Rebecca Carroll. The epilogue ending clearly sets the stage for a sequel. What hair brained scheme is Anne going to have to extricate herself from next time?
